He shuffled down to the river with a cloud of flies following him, cleaned himself, and then returned to scrape the paths he had trod. He braced it with his knee and pulled it against his chest; he moved closer to the hunched centurion. Pushing the rock with his body, he dumped it down toward Vatinius. It landed a foot short, rolling by him to the side. Kallias stared at the unmoving centurion, thinking. He drew his knife, ignored the cautions of those around him, and edged his way down the slope. As Kallias neared, Vatinius lifted his head and said something to him that made the Greek roar contemptuously, “I knew you’d beg for—”
