On a night like last night I am glad I have a decent duvet on my bed. My central heating broke yesterday afternoon and I was left without a plumber on a freezing night. When my aunt traveled to Germany she brought back novelty cuckoo clocks as a souveigner of her trip.  On the front of the clock were tiny wood carvings depicting stags and other forest animals.  The cuckoo itself would emerge from the forest trees and make the cuckoo sound for each hour.  Each of our visits to our aunts home were marked with time spent quietly in a kitchen chair staring intently at the clock waiting for it to come out and cuckoo.  My uncle would tell us to watch the stag as he would twitch his nose just before the cuckoo came out.  We never saw it but it kept us quiet.
